Barcelona’s appeal for the provisional registration of Dani Olmo for the remainder of the season has been denied, potentially sidelining the Spain international from playing for the club starting January 1.
The 26-year-old attacking midfielder was signed from German club RB Leipzig in August for a reported €60 million (£51 million).
However, Barcelona registered him only for the first half of the season due to their inability to comply with La Liga’s wage cap regulations.
La Liga expressed approval of the court’s decision on Friday to dismiss the club’s appeal.
“La Liga has today learned of the ruling… rejecting the request for the provisional registration of Dani Olmo until June 30, 2025, on the grounds that none of the necessary conditions for the adoption of an interim measure have been met,” said the Spanish league.
“The ruling also stresses that ‘the purpose of allowing additional spending is so that a long-term injury does not weaken the team’s competitiveness, not to use a long-term injury to allow the registration of players whose salaries exceed the limit, which is what FC Barcelona is attempting’.”
Barcelona registered Dani Olmo earlier this season after their squad was impacted by long-term injuries, enabling the club to allocate a portion of their wage budget to secure his registration.
However, this temporary four-month allowance is set to expire at the end of December, and the Commercial Court number 10 of Barcelona has denied the club’s request for his provisional registration.
Spanish media reports indicate that Barcelona has filed an appeal to the magistrate court, with a hearing scheduled for Monday, just one day before the deadline.
La Liga clarified that the decision to deny Olmo’s registration was initially made by its Budget Validation Body and subsequently upheld by the Financial Fair Play Committee, the Social Appeals Committee, and the UEFA Second Instance Licensing Committee of the Spanish Football Federation.
Olmo, who began his career at Barcelona’s youth academy before moving to Dinamo Zagreb at age 16, played a key role in Spain’s European Championship victory this summer. He has scored six goals in 15 appearances for Barcelona this season.
Currently, Barcelona sits third in La Liga, trailing leaders Atletico Madrid by three points.
