Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson stable in hospital

Crystal Palace reports that manager Roy Hodgson is in stable condition in the hospital after experiencing an illness during Thursday morning’s training session.

The news conference for Palace was called off when the 76-year-old fell ill.

Reports surfaced Thursday morning suggesting that Palace might dismiss Hodgson, given the team’s current standing at 15th in the Premier League, holding a five-point cushion above the relegation zone.

Palace is scheduled to play Everton at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Monday.

“Following news that Roy Hodgson was taken ill during today’s training session, we can confirm that he is now stable and is currently undergoing tests in hospital,” the club said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Everybody at the club sends their best wishes to Roy for a speedy recovery.”

According to BBC Sport sources, Hodgson is on the verge of being dismissed, with former Eintracht Frankfurt manager Oliver Glasner emerging as a strong candidate for his replacement.

Hodgson recently oversaw his 200th match as Palace manager, a 3-1 defeat at Selhurst Park against Chelsea.

Since their September victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, the club has only managed to secure three league wins and suffered defeat in 10 of their last 16 top-flight matches.

This marks Hodgson’s second tenure as Palace manager, having returned for the final 10 games of last season under a short-term deal after Patrick Vieira’s departure. Under his guidance, the team finished 11th in the table before he agreed to stay on for the 2023-24 campaign.

Supporters have voiced their discontent in recent weeks, displaying banners and expressing frustration over the club’s management and Hodgson’s leadership.

They voiced their displeasure when he substituted Eberechi Eze after 64 minutes in their FA Cup third-round defeat against Everton last month, with some supporters at Goodison Park chanting “you don’t know what you’re doing”.

Some Palace fans criticized Hodgson for bringing on Michael Olise as a substitute at half-time against Brighton, despite the winger reportedly struggling with injury, with the team already trailing 3-0.

Olise’s appearance lasted only 11 minutes before he aggravated a hamstring issue.

Glasner, aged 49, achieved success with Frankfurt in 2022 by clinching the Europa League title during his inaugural season in charge. They secured victory over Scottish side Rangers in the final, triumphing in a penalty shootout.

After leading Frankfurt to the Champions League knockout stages last season, the Austrian departed the club despite having a year left on his contract, following a streak of 10 Bundesliga matches without a win.
