David goal helps Lille defeat Real Madrid

Defending champions Real Madrid suffered their first Champions League defeat since May 2023, falling to an upset by Lille at the Pierre-Mauroy Stadium.

This marked Real Madrid’s first loss in 36 matches across all competitions, with their last defeat dating back to January 18 against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey.

Lille’s Jonathan David scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot after a VAR review determined that Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga had blocked Edon Zhegrova’s free-kick with his arm.

Lille dominated throughout the match, fully deserving their win after a 2-0 loss to Sporting in their opening game of the competition.

Before his goal, Canadian international David was denied by a brilliant double save from Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, as Bruno Genesio’s team controlled the game.

Brazilian forward Endrick, who became Real Madrid’s youngest-ever starter in the competition at 18 years and 73 days, struggled to make an impact, and England midfielder Jude Bellingham also found it difficult to influence the match.

Lille had to withstand a late surge from Real Madrid, who brought on Kylian Mbappe—returning from a thigh injury—just before the hour mark.

In the closing moments, Antonio Rudiger’s header was cleared off the line, and Arda Guler’s close-range header went straight to Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.

Real Madrid, who won their opener against Stuttgart, will host Borussia Dortmund in a rematch of last season’s final in their next Champions League fixture, while Lille will travel to Atletico Madrid.
