Borussia Dortmund strengthened their midfield on Tuesday by signing Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea on a deal running until 2030.

The 21-year-old England under-21 international joins for a reported €25 million (£21m) after impressing during a loan spell last season. He made 17 appearances across competitions, scoring once, as Dortmund reached the Club World Cup quarter-finals despite his injury setbacks.

“I’m happy Borussia Dortmund is now my footballing home,” Chukwuemeka said in a statement. “I will give everything to help us achieve our goals as a team.”

Born in Austria, Chukwuemeka moved to England as a child, graduating from Aston Villa’s academy before joining Chelsea in 2022. Dortmund’s sporting director, Lars Ricken, said the club was “delighted” to sign him, praising his creativity and quality in attacking midfield.

Dortmund have been active in the transfer market this summer, also bringing in Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland and Yan Couto from Manchester City. Bild reported that further Premier League arrivals could include Chelsea defender Aaron Anselmino and Wolves striker Fabio Silva before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho, who has already enjoyed two spells at Dortmund and recently ended a loan stint at Chelsea, has also been linked with a return to the Westfalenstadion.

Meanwhile, the club extended coach Niko Kovac’s contract by one year, keeping him at Dortmund until 2027.
