Ecuador Stun Germany to Reach World Cup Knockout Stage
Match Report
Ecuador secured a dramatic place in the World Cup knockout rounds alongside Germany after overturning an early deficit to claim a 2-1 victory over the Group E winners.
Gonzalo Plata netted the decisive goal in the 78th minute at New York New Jersey Stadium, after Nilson Angulo had cancelled out Leroy Sane’s opener within the first 10 minutes. The victory ensured Ecuador progressed as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
The South Americans needed all three points to keep their hopes alive and were also dependent on Ivory Coast defeating Curacao, a favour that arrived courtesy of a 2-0 result.
However, Ecuador’s task became more difficult almost immediately, falling behind after just two minutes.
Germany, fortunate to escape punishment for Aleksandar Pavlovic’s high challenge on Pedro Vite, capitalised on the decision moments later. Florian Wirtz supplied the assist, allowing Sane to finish confidently past Hernan Galindez.
Ecuador responded swiftly, levelling the match only seven minutes later to end a 242-minute wait for a World Cup goal. Angulo struck brilliantly from 20 yards, curling his effort through Pavlovic’s legs and beyond Manuel Neuer.
Despite the setback, Germany remained the more dangerous side in attack. Kai Havertz headed straight at Galindez from a David Raum delivery, while Joel Ordonez produced an excellent block to deny Jamal Musiala.
The Germans believed they had won a penalty early in the second half when Havertz went down in the box, but VAR overturned the decision after ruling that Sane had fouled Vite in the build-up.
At the opposite end, Ecuador captain Enner Valencia, making a record-breaking World Cup appearance for his country, tested Neuer with a powerful long-range effort before being replaced by Kevin Rodriguez in the 64th minute.
The substitution proved decisive. Twelve minutes from time, Rodriguez flicked on a corner towards Plata, who reacted quickest to beat Neuer and lift the ball into the roof of the net to complete Ecuador’s comeback.
Germany pressed for an equaliser, with Deniz Undav striking the side netting, but Sebastian Beccacece’s men held firm to secure a place in the last 32, where England are expected to be their opponents according to Opta’s projections.
Ecuador’s Remarkable Recovery
Having already sealed top spot in Group E, Germany began brightly as they chased a perfect group-stage record for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2006. A victory would also have marked a 12th consecutive win, equalling their national record.
Sane, making his 15th appearance at a major tournament, finally registered his first goal on such a stage, finding the net after just 109 seconds with a composed finish.
Yet Germany’s ongoing defensive issues gave Ecuador encouragement. With their 40th attempt of the tournament, they finally scored their first goal of the competition through Angulo’s superb strike, which left Neuer with no chance.
The German goalkeeper, meanwhile, equalled Lothar Matthaus and Miroslav Klose with 22 World Cup starts, the joint-highest total for a German player.
Germany have now gone nine consecutive World Cup matches without keeping a clean sheet, matching their longest such run and highlighting an area that must improve if they are to challenge for the title.
Beccacece’s decision to substitute Valencia initially divided opinion, but it paid off in spectacular fashion. Rodriguez’s flick-on from a corner created the opportunity for Plata to score the winner, as Ecuador came from behind to win a World Cup match for the first time since 2014.
Defying expectations has become a hallmark of this Ecuador side. Despite beginning their CONMEBOL qualifying campaign in September 2023 with a three-point deduction, they still finished second in the standings.
Now, nearly three years later, they have reached the World Cup knockout rounds for only the second time in their history, two decades after their previous appearance beyond the group stage.
