Egypt defeat Super Eagles in pre-AFCON friendly

Egypt recorded a morale-boosting victory over Africa Cup of Nations rivals Nigeria just days before the tournament gets underway.

In an entertaining pre-tournament friendly played in Cairo on Tuesday night, Egypt went ahead deservedly shortly before the half-hour mark through Mahmoud Saber.

The ZED forward was supplied by the lively Zizo, who troubled Nigeria’s defence all night, before tapping in at the far post.

Nigeria struggled to find rhythm going forward, although their attacking intent was evident. They nearly drew level when Paul Onuachu’s long pass almost forced an own goal from Yasser Ibrahim, but a smart save spared Egypt the blushes.

That moment briefly lifted Nigeria, and they soon found an equaliser.

Zaidu’s free kick from the left caught Mohamed El Shenawy at his near post, and the goalkeeper failed to hold on, allowing Chidozie Awaziem to nod in from close range.

Egypt, however, responded strongly after the interval and emerged with renewed energy.

Another incisive move from Zizo opened up space for Mostafa Mohamed, who fired home from inside the box to put Egypt back in front.

Nigeria could not muster a reply as Egypt dominated the closing stages to seal the win.

Egypt begin their AFCON campaign against Zimbabwe on Monday, while Nigeria take on Tanzania a day later.
