England striker Ivan Toney charged with assault over alleged London nightclub incident

England striker Ivan Toney has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm following an alleged incident at a nightclub in central London.

The 30-year-old Al-Ahli forward was charged on July 31 in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred on Wardour Street, Soho, on December 6.

Toney is scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on September 24.

According to the BBC, a spokesperson for the former Brentford striker said Toney acknowledged the charge but intends to contest it in court.

“Ivan acknowledges the charge and although he is naturally shocked, he looks forward to being allowed to clear his name in court,” the spokesperson said.

The charge comes as Toney continues his career in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ahli, having joined the club in 2024 after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most prolific forwards during his time at Brentford.

Toney began his professional career with Northampton Town before spells at Newcastle United and Peterborough United, eventually making his breakthrough at Brentford, where his goalscoring exploits earned him international recognition.

He was included in England’s World Cup squad and started the team’s 6-4 victory over France in the third-place play-off, having also featured as a substitute in the semi-final defeat to Argentina.

The legal proceedings are expected to begin when Toney appears in court later this month, with his representatives maintaining that he will defend the allegations and seek to clear his name.
