EPL: Man Utd extend winless run to six games after Leeds draw

11

Manchester United were unable to ease the mounting pressure on Michael Carrick after playing out a 1-1 draw against Leeds United, extending their winless streak in all competitions to six matches.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s equaliser cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo’s opener, leaving the Red Devils without a victory since defeating Sabah in their Champions League opener in early September. They have also gone five consecutive Premier League games without a win.

Leeds could have secured all three points, having created the better scoring opportunities in Sunday’s second half. Anton Stach missed what was arguably the hosts’ best chance to claim victory.

Although neither side created a clear-cut opportunity during the opening 25 minutes, both teams displayed plenty of determination, with Bruno Fernandes and Gabriel Gudmundsson among those involved in strong early challenges.

Leeds came close to opening the scoring when Senne Lammens saved Nico Elvedi’s downward header from a Stach free-kick. However, Manchester United soon squandered an even better opportunity, as Mbeumo headed Youri Tielemans’ well-placed cross wide of the target.

Mbeumo made amends in the 35th minute when Tielemans delivered another excellent ball from the right. The forward stretched to connect with the low cross, directing it into the bottom-left corner to give United the lead.

The hosts threatened on a couple of occasions before the break, but Calvert-Lewin failed to trouble Lammens with a header, while James Justin could not generate enough power on his shot after an impressive forward run.

Leeds eventually drew level six minutes after the restart. Tarik Muharemovic flicked on Stach’s corner, allowing Calvert-Lewin to position himself perfectly and volley the ball past Lammens.

The home side continued to dominate, with Ao Tanaka, Noah Okafor and Stach all sending efforts over the crossbar. Stach had the clearest opportunity when Diogo Dalot headed the ball directly into his path inside the Manchester United penalty area, but he failed to capitalise.

Fernandes came close to restoring United’s advantage with an effort aimed at the bottom-left corner. However, Carrick’s men struggled to make an impact even after Matheus Cunha came on as a substitute.

Leeds continued searching for a winner, with Lukas Nmecha and Stach both presented with opportunities during a late goalmouth scramble, but neither could find the decisive finish.

Man Utd Surrender Another Lead as Calvert-Lewin Continues Home Scoring Form

Manchester United once again failed to turn an early advantage into victory after Mbeumo’s opener, continuing a worrying pattern in the opening stages of the 2026-27 campaign.

Three of Mbeumo’s four Premier League goals this season have given United a 1-0 lead. Only Erling Haaland, with four, has scored more opening goals of this kind in the current campaign.

However, United have drawn each of their last three league matches in which the Cameroonian has put them ahead, including encounters against Everton and Tottenham.

For Leeds, Calvert-Lewin once again proved decisive when his team needed a goal. The striker has now scored in six of his last seven home Premier League appearances, registering seven goals across those matches.

He has also scored eight Premier League goals since the beginning of April, with only Haaland, who has netted 13, recording more during that period.

Additionally, since Calvert-Lewin made his first home appearance for Leeds last season, his 12 Premier League goals at Elland Road rank third among players scoring at a particular venue. Haaland leads with 19 goals at the Etihad Stadium, followed by Igor Thiago, who has scored 14 at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Ultimately, Carrick may consider himself fortunate to leave Yorkshire with a point, given Leeds’ superiority in the expected goals (xG) statistics.

The hosts recorded an xG of 1.44 compared with Manchester United’s 0.91, with 1.19 of Leeds’ total coming in the second half, underlining their stronger performance after the interval.
