Manchester City have officially completed the signing of Enzo Fernández from Chelsea, with the Argentine midfielder putting pen to paper on a five-year contract.
The agreement will keep the 25-year-old at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2031.
Fernández arrives with considerable experience at the highest level. He lifted four major trophies during his time in Argentina with Defensa y Justicia and River Plate, before helping Benfica secure the Primeira Liga title. He later became an important part of Chelsea’s squad that won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
During his spell in west London, Fernández established himself as one of the Premier League’s most technically accomplished central midfielders.
His international career has also been decorated with major honours. He was part of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad and their 2024 Copa America triumph, while he also featured in another World Cup final this summer, where La Albiceleste were beaten by Spain.
Fernández expressed his delight at completing his move to City and said he is eager to contribute to the club’s continued success.
On joining Manchester City, Fernández said: “Manchester City are the most successful club in England in recent times.
“Every player wants to be part of a club like this because everyone knows how well-run City are.
“I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies. This is a club built for success.
“If you look across the squad, City have quality in every area. I want to learn from my new teammates and become a better player.
“I pride myself on continually improving my game. Anyone who’s worked with me will know how hard I train every single day and how much I put into matches. I give absolutely everything and I can promise Manchester City that will continue now I’m here.
“I want to thank Hugo, Enzo, Khaldoon and everyone at City who has made this deal possible. I want to take the faith shown in me and repay it as soon as possible.”
City Director of Football Hugo Viana also welcomed the arrival of the midfielder, highlighting his technical ability, work ethic and versatility.

“He is a complete midfielder: technically gifted, hardworking, tenacious and a goalscorer.
“He is adept at playing different styles of football. He is comfortable playing a possession-based game, and he can play on the counter effectively, too.
“To have played in two World Cup finals and won major trophies in multiple countries at just 25 says everything you need to know about his mentality, professionalism and technical quality.
“We are delighted to bring him here and feel very strongly he will improve our team.”
City have extended a warm welcome to Fernández and are looking forward to seeing him make his debut in the famous sky-blue shirt.
A complete midfielder
Born in Villa Bonich, San Martin, within the Buenos Aires metropolitan area, Fernández developed a passion for football from a very young age.
Football runs deep in his family, with many of his relatives being devoted River Plate supporters. His first name was even inspired by legendary River midfielder Enzo Francescoli.
Fernández began playing with a ball at his feet as soon as he could and quickly made football his sole ambition. He joined River Plate’s academy at the age of six and progressed through the club’s youth system before leaving on a two-year loan to Defensa y Justicia at 18.
At Defensa y Justicia, he worked under former Parma, Inter and AC Milan striker Hernan Crespo, a highly respected figure in Argentine football. Fernández gradually became a regular starter and helped the club win the 2020 Copa Sudamericana and 2021 Recopa Sudamericana.
The loan proved crucial to his development, allowing him to return to River Plate as a more rounded midfielder. He subsequently helped the club win the Argentine league title in 2021.
His performances soon attracted attention from across Europe, with Benfica securing his services in the summer of 2022. Wearing the No.13 shirt previously associated with club icon Eusebio, Fernández adapted quickly to European football.
His breakthrough onto the global stage came at the 2022 World Cup. At only 21, Fernández played a key role as Argentina claimed their third World Cup title, showcasing a remarkably complete skill set. His ability to defend, score, create chances and dictate the tempo of matches made him one of the tournament’s standout players.
Just six months after arriving in Portugal, and with Benfica pushing towards league success, Fernández moved to Chelsea in the Premier League. He went on to win the Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup while establishing himself among the division’s leading midfielders.
He added another international honour in 2024 by winning the Copa America with Argentina and featured in another World Cup final this summer, where Argentina lost to Spain. Fernández now has 49 international caps and eight goals.
For a player aged just 25, his list of achievements is already impressive.
Now, he begins a new chapter with Manchester City.

Fernández possesses many of the qualities associated with the modern midfielder. He is composed in possession, technically excellent, possesses outstanding vision and passing range, and has a strong eye for goal. He is always involved, embraces responsibility and performs confidently under pressure.
One of his biggest strengths is his ability to make late runs into the penalty area and finish attacking moves. Last season, he registered 15 goals and seven assists in 54 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions.
With Fernández now joining Manchester City, the club have added another versatile and highly accomplished midfielder who can contribute at both ends of the pitch.
