Tottenham Hotspur ended their long-standing struggles at Stamford Bridge with just their second Premier League-era victory away to Chelsea, thanks to a late own goal from goalkeeper Mike Penders and a brilliant strike from Mathys Tel.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side travelled to west London with a poor record against their rivals, having managed just one victory in their previous 41 visits to SW6. However, Spurs overturned that history with an impressive 2-0 triumph over Xabi Alonso’s 10-man Chelsea.

Tottenham, who recorded their first league win of the season on Monday against Coventry, took the lead in the 77th minute when Penders punched Mateus Fernandes’ corner into his own net. Chelsea’s situation worsened shortly afterwards when Palmer was sent off.

The England international had already been booked for barging into Fernandes before referee Chris Kavanagh showed him a second yellow card for a late challenge on Conor Gallagher with 10 minutes remaining.

With Tottenham looking to protect their advantage, Tel sealed the result with a spectacular individual effort. The forward collected the ball inside his own half, surged past Maxence Lacroix and fired into the bottom corner, prompting De Zerbi to celebrate enthusiastically along the touchline.

The victory marked Tottenham’s first Premier League win at Stamford Bridge since 2018.

Chelsea had won 10 of their previous 12 meetings with Spurs following their 2-1 victory in May. However, Alonso was without João Pedro, while Penders started in goal in place of Emiliano Martínez.

Tottenham also had several key absentees, but De Zerbi handed midfield responsibilities to the £185 million pairing of Sandro Tonali and Fernandes for the first time. The visitors controlled much of the opening exchanges.

Despite Spurs’ early dominance, Chelsea created the first clear opportunity after Fernandes lost possession near the corner flag. Palmer capitalised on the mistake and unleashed a shot, but Antonín Kinsky produced a save to keep the scores level.

Tottenham gradually created chances of their own. James Maddison was stopped by a strong challenge from Lacroix, while Mohammed Kudus failed to hit the target after connecting with a cross from Tel.

The visitors came close to breaking the deadlock in the 29th minute when Maddison combined with Andrew Robertson, who exchanged passes with Tel down the left before finding Omar Marmoush. However, Marmoush’s low shot went straight at Penders.

Chelsea nearly took advantage of a poor pass from Kinsky shortly afterwards, but the Tottenham goalkeeper denied Jordan Henderson’s effort from the edge of the box before blocking Pedro Neto’s follow-up in the 36th minute.

Four minutes into the second half, De Zerbi was forced to replace Maddison after the midfielder went down injured, disrupting Tottenham’s momentum. Neto threatened again for Chelsea shortly after the hour mark, but Kinsky made another important save.

Alonso subsequently introduced Marco Palestra, while Tottenham brought on Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke as heavy rain continued to fall.

Tensions rose with 20 minutes remaining when Fernandes deliberately handled the ball to stop Palmer. The Chelsea forward reacted by barging into the Tottenham midfielder, resulting in bookings for Palmer, Micky van de Ven, Fernandes and De Zerbi.

Fernandes soon returned to the spotlight when his effort was deflected behind for a corner with 16 minutes left. The midfielder delivered a curling ball into the box, but Penders could only punch it into his own net under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke in the 77th minute.

Tottenham had taken the lead at Stamford Bridge for the first time since 2018, and their chances of securing all three points improved further when Palmer stepped on Gallagher’s ankle and received his second yellow card.

With Chelsea reduced to 10 men, Spurs continued to push forward. Tel then produced the decisive moment, driving from inside his own half before unleashing a long-range effort into the bottom corner.

His superb finish sparked celebrations in Tottenham’s dugout as De Zerbi’s men claimed a significant away victory over their London rivals.
