Euro 2024: Ronaldo in tears after penalty miss against Slovenia

Cristiano Ronaldo broke down in tears after missing a penalty during extra-time in Portugal’s Euro 2024 last-16 clash against Slovenia on Monday.

Ronaldo had the opportunity to put Portugal ahead late in the first period of extra time in a tense, goalless match in Frankfurt. The 39-year-old stepped up to take the spot-kick after Diogo Jota was fouled, but Jan Oblak made a superb save.

After scoring his previous 29 penalties, Ronaldo was visibly stunned to see Oblak stop his shot, holding his head in disbelief. Moments later, the whistle blew for half-time in extra-time, and Ronaldo began openly weeping as he stood among his Portugal teammates.

Consoled by teammate Joao Palhinha, Ronaldo managed to wipe away his tears and continue playing when the match resumed. Portugal fans sang “Viva Ronaldo” after his emotional moment was shown on the big screen in the Frankfurt Arena.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star has now missed three of the nine penalties he has taken at major international tournaments.
