Everton overcame the absence of Jack Grealish to beat Newcastle United and book a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at League Two Fleetwood Town according to BBC Sport.
The England winger, 31, was made unavailable for selection due to a breach of club discipline, which is understood to arise from an unauthorised absence from training.
The Toffees, however, cruised past Newcastle without the on-loan signing from Manchester City after scoring two first-half goals.
James Garner showed great vision from just inside the box to put them ahead in the 34th minute.
That came moments after captain James Tarkowski had produced an outstanding challenge to deny William Osula a goal at the other end.
Everton, cheered on by Prime Minister Andy Burnham at Hill Dickinson Stadium, doubled their lead shortly before half-time through Hayden Hackney’s finish – his first goal for the Toffees since joining from Middlesbrough for £16m in the summer.
David Moyes’ men added a third in the 69th minute through Thierno Barry’s seventh goal of the season after a neat finish from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s cross.
Newcastle scored a late consolation through Dan Burn’s 89th-minute header which led to a fracas and Tarkowski shoving Joelinton to the ground.
The pair, along with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, were all booked for their reactions.
Newcastle had started well with Harvey Barnes and Fabian Schar forcing Pickford into saves.
But the 2025 winners crumbled after falling behind.
Everton, who have never won the League Cup and not won a major trophy since an FA Cup triumph in 1995, will visit Fleetwood, who are 18th in League Two, but caused the shock of the last 16 by beating Premier League champions Arsenal on Tuesday night.
Newcastle, who have won just two of their last six matches in all competitions, will have the opportunity on Monday to exact instant revenge when they host Everton in the Premier League at St James’ Park (20:00 GMT).
