Wayne Rooney expresses his ambition for a swift comeback to coaching, driven by his desire to fulfill his dream of leading either Manchester United or Everton from the sidelines.
The former Manchester United and Everton striker was dismissed by Championship club Birmingham in January after just 83 days at the helm.
Prior to this, Rooney had managerial stints with Derby County and the MLS team DC United.
“Managing Manchester United or Everton is the aim, these big jobs are where you want to get to,” the ex-England captain said on Match of the Day.
“But it’s a process,” added Rooney, 38. “I have got to go through the steps and get myself back on track.”
Speaking while he was working as a pundit on United’s FA Cup tie at Nottingham Forest, he said: “I want to get myself back into management to make sure in the next 10 years I’m hopefully in a position to go into one of the big jobs.”
Rooney assumed the role of Birmingham boss on October 11th, taking over from John Eustace, whose dismissal sparked controversy despite Birmingham being sixth in the Championship at the time.
During Rooney’s tenure, Birmingham suffered nine defeats in 15 games, leading to a decline in the standings to 20th place.
His dismissal came after Birmingham’s 3-0 defeat against Leeds United on January 2nd.
“I definitely want to get back into management. It was a setback what happened at Birmingham but I’m a fighter and I want to get back into it,” he said.
“You know as a manager [being sacked] is part of the job and you will have setbacks. It’s about how you bounce back.
“I’ve had some good time to reflect and will make sure I get it right next time.”
