Former Chelsea full-back Filipe Luis has won his first trophy as a manager, just over a month after taking charge of Flamengo.

On Sunday, Flamengo triumphed 1-0 over Atletico Mineiro in the second leg of the Copa do Brasil, the Brazilian equivalent of the FA Cup, securing a 4-1 aggregate victory.

Luis, 39, was appointed interim manager on September 30 following the dismissal of former Brazil coach Tite, and was confirmed as the permanent manager the following day.

The former full-back made 333 appearances across two stints with Atletico Madrid, alongside a season at Chelsea in 2014-15, where he helped the Blues win the Premier League and EFL Cup.

He joined Flamengo in 2019 and retired in December 2023 after winning two Copa Libertadores titles and two Brasileiro Serie A championships.

Luis began his managerial career with Flamengo’s under-17 team in January, later stepping up to the under-20s, where he secured the Under-20 Intercontinental Cup in August.

After Sunday’s victory, Luis, who has won six out of eight games in charge, praised Flamengo as “the best squad in South America” and expressed confidence that they can “compete with some teams in Europe.”

Flamengo currently sit fifth in the Brasileiro Serie A, 10 points behind leaders Botafogo, with a game in hand and six matches remaining.
