Former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has become part of the ownership group for Major League Soccer expansion club San Diego FC.

The 36-year-old, who joined A-League side Western Sydney Wanderers in September, is now expanding his influence off the pitch.

San Diego FC is set to debut in MLS in 2025 as the league’s 30th team.

“Joining San Diego FC as a partner is an exciting opportunity to help build something truly special in a city and league that are experiencing incredible growth,” said Mata.

San Diego said Mata is the “first active international soccer player to hold an ownership stake in Major League Soccer”.

During his illustrious 11-year career in the Premier League, Juan Mata secured six major trophies with Chelsea and Manchester United, including the prestigious UEFA Champions League title.

On the international stage, Mata played a key role in Spain’s historic triumphs at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2012, although he has not represented his country since 2016.

San Diego FC chairman, Sir Mohamed Mansour, praised Mata as a “serial winner,” emphasizing his alignment with the club’s vision to “build a winning team for the long-term.”
