Ex-Rangers boss Beale joins Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq

Former Rangers and Sunderland manager Michael Beale has been appointed assistant coach to Steven Gerrard at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

Beale, 44, reunites with Gerrard, having previously served as his assistant at both Rangers and Aston Villa.

Together, they achieved success in Scotland, guiding Rangers to their first Premiership title in a decade during the 2020-21 season.

After joining Gerrard at Aston Villa in November 2021, Beale departed in the summer of 2022 to take up the managerial role at Queens Park Rangers.

He briefly led QPR to the top of the Championship in October but declined an opportunity to manage Wolves before returning to Rangers as head coach in November.

Beale’s second stint at Rangers ended less than a year later, following a poor start to the 2023-24 season, which saw the team lose three of their first seven league matches.

Subsequently, he became Sunderland manager, but his tenure lasted just 12 games—the shortest in the club’s history—before his dismissal in February 2024.

Now rejoining Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq, Beale aims to help turn around the club’s fortunes, with the team sitting 10th in the Saudi Pro League after losing five of their last six matches.
