Former Zimbabwean goalkeeper George Chigova, aged 32, passed away after collapsing at his home in South Africa on Wednesday, as confirmed by Pretoria club SuperSport United in a statement.
Chigova had previously collapsed during a training session with top-flight side SuperSport in July of last year. He was currently on leave, having been diagnosed with a heart condition.
The news of the passing of former SuperSport United player, George Chigova, has been received with great sadness.
Notable moments in his international career include contributing to Zimbabwe’s journey to the 2014 African Nations Championship semifinals and participating in the Africa Cup of Nations five years later.
His early senior club career commenced with Harare Gunners in 2010, and he later played for Dynamos, the most prominent team in Zimbabwe, before making the move to SuperSport.
Chigova spent five seasons with Polokwane City in the South African first and second tiers before reuniting with SuperSport in 2020.
George had two spells with the club, initially joining in 2014 from Dynamos in Zimbabwe and returning in 2020 after a stint with Polokwane City from 2015.
His passing occurred just five days after the death of former Zimbabwe midfielder and coach Rahman Gumbo, aged 59, who succumbed to a heart attack in neighbouring Botswana.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends, both in South Africa and Zimbabwe, during this challenging and sorrowful time.
