Fabregas’s Como get first Serie A win in 23 years

In a historic match at the Gewiss Stadium, Cesc Fabregas’s Como secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Atalanta, marking their first Serie A win in over two decades.

The game showcased Como’s determination, as they scored three goals in a dramatic 12-minute spell that turned the tide against a strong Atalanta side.

“It’s incredible to lead this team to such an important victory,” Fabregas said after the match on Tuesday night, reflecting on the significance of the win for the club.

Fabregas, appointed head coach in July 2024 ahead of Como’s first Serie A season in 21 years, previously served as assistant to Osian Roberts when the team earned automatic promotion last season.

The match, originally scheduled for Monday evening, was delayed due to torrential rain in Bergamo and postponed until Tuesday.

Despite the change, both Fabregas and Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini stuck with their starting lineups.

Atalanta started strong, with Mateo Retegui testing Como goalkeeper Emil Audero early. Zappacosta opened the scoring in the 18th minute, firing a half-volley into the near corner after a cleared corner, sending the home crowd into celebration.

However, Como responded with persistence. Marco Carnesecchi denied a couple of close efforts from Patrick Cutrone, while Sergi Roberto had a shot saved in the bottom corner. By halftime, Como had recorded five shots, three on target, compared to Atalanta’s two, signaling their growing momentum.

Just 20 seconds into the second half, Como equalized with a powerful strike from Gabriel Strefezza, assisted by a deft flick from Sergi Roberto. Minutes later, a long-range effort by Nico Paz deflected off Sead Kolasinac, giving Como the lead with an own goal. Two minutes later, Paz delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Alieu Fadera, who extended Como’s lead to 3-1.

Atalanta fought back, and in the seventh minute of injury time, debutant Vanja Vlahovic earned a penalty, which Ademola Lookman converted. Despite the late push, the match ended 3-2, sealing a famous victory for Como.
