Nigeria women’s national under-20 football team, known as the Falconets, have qualified for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland after narrowly overcoming Malawi women’s national under-20 football team’s Young Scorchers 3-2 on aggregate.

Although the Falconets were beaten 2-1 in the return leg played in Lilongwe on Saturday, their earlier 2-0 win in Ikenne ensured they progressed.

The home side opened the scoring in the early stages of the first half with a header after taking advantage of a defensive lapse by Nigeria. The Falconets nearly drew level when Favour Nkwocha’s fierce header rattled the crossbar after a threatening delivery from Kindness Ifeanyi. Malawi headed into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.

The Young Scorchers piled more pressure on Nigeria in the 55th minute by netting a second goal, bringing the aggregate score to 2-2 and leaving the Falconets’ qualification hopes hanging in the balance.

But a tactical change by Coach Moses Aduku turned the game around. Substitute Precious Oscar made an instant impact in the 62nd minute, applying pressure on a Malawian defender, winning possession, and calmly finishing the equaliser that restored Nigeria’s aggregate lead.

The Falconets held firm defensively for the remainder of the match to seal qualification and preserve Nigeria’s impressive record of always reaching the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals.

The 2026 tournament is scheduled to take place in Poland from 5 to 26 September 2026.

The Nigerian side also thanked Ibrahim Miringa, Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Malawi, along with his team, for the support provided throughout their stay in the country.
