Nigeria’s Falconets have reached the final round of the U-20 World Cup qualifiers after seeing off Tanzania 2-1 over the weekend.
After a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Dar es Salaam last Sunday, the Nigerian side secured their spot in the next stage of the African qualification series with a 2-1 victory over their opponents at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Sunday. The aggregate score for both legs concluded at 3-2.
Goals from Janet Akekoromowei and Comfort Folorunsho secured the victory, propelling Nigeria to the final round of the qualification phase.
Akekoromowei netted in the 16th minute, but Jamila Mnunduka equalized for the visitors just five minutes later. However, Nigeria regained the lead in the 60th minute when Folorunsho scored with a powerful header under the guidance of Coach Christopher Danjuma.
Nigeria, with an unblemished record in the competition, is set to face Burundi in the final qualification match for a spot in next year’s World Cup in Colombia.
The Falconets concluded their 2022 U-20 World Cup campaign at the quarter-final stage.
