Falcons target early WAFCON Quarter-Final Spot
Nigeria set sights on quarter-final after strong start
Following their emphatic opening win in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Nigeria’s Super Falcons are poised to secure a quarter-final place with a victory over Botswana on Thursday.
The nine-time champions dominated Tunisia 3–0 on Monday, launching their bid for a 10th continental title in Morocco. A second Group B win would all but guarantee a spot in the last eight.
Clinical Falcons Off to Flying Start
Goals from Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and Chinwendu Ihezuo powered Nigeria past Tunisia, setting a confident tone for Justin Madugu’s side. The team, a mix of seasoned and emerging talent, will aim to maintain momentum against Botswana at Casablanca’s Larbi Zaouli Stadium.
Fully Fit Squad Focuses on Botswana
The Super Falcons head into the match with no injury concerns. Coach Madugu reiterated the team’s focus and discipline.
“We are taking one match at a time without underestimating any side,” he told reporters. “Victory over Botswana is very much achievable as we pursue our ‘Mission X’.”
Nigeria Hold Historical Edge
Nigeria defeated Botswana 2–0 in their only previous encounter at WAFCON 2022, courtesy of goals from Ifeoma Onumonu and Christy Ucheibe. Botswana eventually exited in the quarter-finals after finishing third in their group.
This time, the Mares face an uphill battle. They lost their opener 1–0 to Algeria, making the clash with Nigeria a must-win if they hope to advance.
Botswana Undaunted by Nigerian Might
Despite Nigeria’s stature, Botswana remain optimistic. Coach Alex Malete, who led the team in 2022, insists his players believe they can reach the last eight.
“We believe in our structure, in each other, and in our goal,” said the 35-year-old tactician. “With heart, desire, and discipline, we can make it a competitive game and hopefully get a good result.”
