Fenerbahce has initiated discussions with Jose Mourinho regarding their head coach position.

Mourinho, aged 61, has been without a managerial role since his departure from Roma in January.

The negotiations were disclosed by the Istanbul-based club on the public disclosure platform KAP, as required by legal procedures to inform investors.

Fenerbahce recently parted ways with their former manager Ismail Kartal, who led the team to accumulate 99 points in the league last season but finished three points behind city rivals Galatasaray.

“Our company has started negotiations with Jose Mario Dos Santos Mourinho Felix for the post of Football A team coach,” the Fenerbahce post read.

“It is announced with respect to our investors.”

If negotiations reach a successful conclusion, Mourinho will be tasked with guiding Fenerbahce to their first Super Lig title since the 2013-14 season.

The Portuguese manager boasts an impressive record of eight league trophies across four countries: England, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. This includes three titles with Chelsea, two with Inter Milan, two with Porto, and one with Real Madrid.

Furthermore, Mourinho has clinched five major European trophies, including the Champions League with Inter and Porto, as well as the Europa League with Manchester United.

His most recent silverware came in 2022 with Roma, where he led the team to victory in the Europa Conference League, marking the club’s inaugural European trophy. Additionally, he guided them to the Europa League final the following season, although they ultimately lost to Sevilla on penalties.

Mourinho’s tenure at Roma ended in January when he was succeeded by Daniele de Rossi, with the club positioned ninth in Serie A. Eventually, Roma finished sixth in the league standings.

Mourinho is due to appear on TNT Sports as a pundit during the broadcaster’s coverage of the Champions League final on Saturday.

Fenerbahce, who have been Turkish champions a record 28 times, have finished runners-up in the past three seasons, with Kartal’s side losing just once and drawing six matches as they failed to stop Galatasaray claiming back-to-back titles.
