The FIFA observer at the 2022 Nigeria Football Federation Elections, Gelson Fernandez has disclosed that the world football governing body came to monitor the election to ensure everything called football is protected before, during, and after the election.

Fernandez who was a Swiss international and was responsible for the lone goal that sank Spain at the 2010 FIFA World Cup opined that he has always loved Nigerian football after the Super Eagles dazzled the world at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States.

He said he drew inspiration from the Eagles’ performance which helped him in his career.

“Your country had a fantastic team at the 1994 World Cup. From us at FIFA, we are here to protect the football, our delegates and make sure football and football development is happening everywhere in the world and in each country,” Fernandez said.

“It is why we are here today to observe the election and we do hope it goes smoothly.”
