FIFA Council to consider sanctions call against Israel

FIFA will deliberate on possible sanctions against the Israel Football Federation on Thursday, following a proposal by the Palestine Football Association (PFA).

The PFA had previously called for a vote in March to suspend Israel from FIFA, citing the ongoing war in Gaza.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino stated in May that the matter would be handled by the FIFA Council, the organization’s main decision-making body.

On the agenda for the upcoming FIFA Council meeting is the “proposal submitted by the Palestine Football Association” at the 74th FIFA Congress.

The PFA accuses Israel’s football federation of violating FIFA regulations and seeks sanctions against Israel’s national teams and clubs.

Shino Moshe Zuares, president of the Israel Football Federation (IFF), has dismissed the proposal as a “cynical political and hostile attempt” by the Palestinian association to undermine Israeli football.

Due to security concerns, Israel has been playing its Nations League home matches in Hungary, and their away game against Belgium was also moved there.

They are set to host France and play in Italy during the October international break.

This FIFA Council meeting comes amid heightened tensions, including Israel’s military response to the October 7 Hamas attack and its ongoing campaign in Gaza, as well as escalating confrontations with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and missile launches from Iran.
