Nigeria emerged as the dominant force at the recently concluded 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), capping their tournament victory with a clean sweep of major individual accolades.

The Super Falcons staged a remarkable comeback in the final against hosts Morocco, overturning a two-goal halftime deficit to seal a thrilling 3-2 victory in Rabat — a match already being hailed as one of football’s most iconic turnarounds.

This memorable win saw several Nigerian stars and officials recognised for their outstanding performances. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who secured “three Woman of the Match awards”, was named “Player of the Tournament.” Although she scored just once, her leadership, determination, and relentless drive were instrumental in Nigeria’s journey to a historic “10th WAFCON crown.”

Her teammate, Chiamaka Nnadozie, claimed the “Goalkeeper of the Tournament” award. The Brighton FC goalkeeper impressed with her sharp reflexes and consistency, conceding just once — a penalty in the semi-final against South Africa — before Morocco broke her open-play record with two goals in the final.

Meanwhile, Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak was awarded the “Golden Boot” for her five-goal haul, including a crucial strike in the final.

South Africa, who fell to Nigeria in the semi-finals, received the “Fair Play Award” in recognition of their commendable conduct and discipline throughout the tournament.

Nigeria’s interim manager Justin Madugu was also honoured as “Coach of the Tournament”, having led the 2018 champions back to glory.

With the dramatic win, Nigeria successfully completed their quest for a “10th title”, dubbed “Mission X.” Despite a shaky start to the tournament that raised concerns among supporters, the Super Falcons ultimately rose to the occasion and etched another proud chapter in WAFCON history.

The next edition of the tournament will once again be hosted by Morocco in 2026.
