Gennaro Gattuso has stepped down as Italy national team head coach following the Azzurri’s defeat in their World Cup playoff against Bosnia, where they lost on penalties. The result means Italy have now missed qualification for the last three World Cup tournaments.

In an official statement released by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), both parties confirmed the mutual termination of Gattuso’s contract. The federation expressed gratitude for his commitment, professionalism, and passion during his nine-month spell in charge, wishing him success in his future endeavours.

Gattuso, in his own farewell message, said he was leaving with a “heavy heart” after failing to achieve the target set for him. He stressed that stepping aside was the right decision to allow fresh technical direction for the national team.

He thanked FIGC president Gabriele Gravina, Gianluigi Buffon, the federation staff, and the players for their support and dedication during his tenure. He also paid tribute to Italian fans, describing their unwavering support as deeply meaningful throughout his time in charge.

Gattuso concluded by saying his bond with the Azzurri will remain forever, adding that the national team will always hold a special place in his heart.
