Ghana has stepped up preparations to host a successful 13th edition of the All-Africa Games (AAG) in 2023, with the renovation and upgrading of sporting facilities across the country, President Nana Akufo-Addo said on Thursday.

Delivering his 3rd State of Nation Address in Parliament, Akufo-Addo said the AAG will position Ghana as a preferred destination for the development of sporting disciplines on the continent.

“We have begun renovating and upgrading our sporting infrastructure such as the Accra and Cape Coast sports stadia, and the Azumah Nelson sports complex in Kaneshie, and a complete refurbishment of sports facilities across the country,” he said.

Ghana was declared host of the AAG at the 3rd Specialised Technical Committee on Youth, Culture and Sports forum of the AU Commission Minister’s session held in Algiers, Algeria in October 2018.

The AAG is a multi-sport event held every four years with the competing nations coming from the African continent.

This will be the first time that Ghana will be hosting the tournament.
The 2023 All-Africa Games will also serve as qualifiers for the various disciplines for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

According to Ghana’s Sports Ministry, hosting the AAG will be a unique opportunity to rewrite the scripts of the country’s sports for the next century.
