Girona reclaimed the lead in La Liga as Cristian Portu’s first-half goal secured a 1-0 win against Celta Vigo.

They surpassed Real Madrid in the standings, who secured a 2-1 victory against Las Palmas on Saturday.

In just 20 minutes at Estadio Balaidos, Cristian Portu delivered a decisive finish past Vicente Guaita, propelling the visitors back to the top of the table.

Girona now holds a one-point advantage over Real Madrid, although they have played one additional game.

While Portu secured the winning goal, Celta Vigo’s persistent pressure showcased the goalkeeping prowess of Paulo Gazzaniga, formerly associated with Tottenham and Southampton.

Facing an onslaught for an equalizer, the Argentine goalkeeper made a spectacular save, deflecting Jorgen Strand Larsen’s header onto the crossbar, and later denying Oscar Mingueza.

Girona successfully maintained a clean sheet, rebounding from their midweek Copa del Rey exit to Mallorca.
