Gittens nets brace as Dortmund whip Club Brugge
Jamie Gittens netted twice as Borussia Dortmund secured a Champions League victory over Club Brugge.
Last season’s runners-up took the lead in the 76th minute when England Under-21 forward Gittens struck from the edge of the box, with his shot deflecting off two defenders and looping into the far corner.
Gittens added a second goal shortly after, using two stepovers in the box before firing into the bottom corner.
In added time, Serhou Guirassy won a penalty after being fouled by Brandon Mechele, coolly converting it with a chip down the middle.
The match was played at a high tempo, with Hugo Vetlesen coming close for Brugge, hitting the crossbar from close range.
Despite Dortmund’s comfortable-looking scoreline, Brugge created several chances. Raphael Onyedika and Vetlesen forced saves from Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel, while Hans Vanaken missed a shot from the edge of the box, and Christos Tzolis headed wide at the far post.
Brugge were left to regret their missed opportunities as Dortmund struck three times in the final 14 minutes.
