Goalkeeper howler gifts PSG win over debutants Girona
Goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga’s late mistake handed Paris St-Germain a win over Champions League debutants Girona.
Portuguese left-back Nuno Mendes fired a low shot from a tight angle towards Gazzaniga, but the Girona keeper made a costly error, allowing the ball to slip through his hands.
Before Gazzaniga’s mistake, the Spanish side looked set to hold PSG to a draw, thanks to their disciplined and determined defensive display.
Making their first appearance in Europe’s top competition after finishing third in La Liga last season, Girona remained composed, effectively containing PSG, who managed 26 shots without any of their players finding the back of the net.
France’s Ousmane Dembele had several chances to break the deadlock for PSG, including a curling effort that hit the crossbar and a goal attempt that was brilliantly stopped by Ladislav Krejci’s last-ditch tackle.
Supported by their vocal away fans, Girona defended well and passed smartly to disrupt PSG’s rhythm, though they posed little attacking threat of their own, focusing mainly on withstanding the home side’s relentless pressure.
Luis Enrique’s team struggled to create many clear-cut chances until Gazzaniga’s late blunder handed them the breakthrough.
Girona will next face Feyenoord at home on Wednesday, 2 October, while PSG will travel to Arsenal on Tuesday, 1 October.
