Griezmann scores as Atletico knock out Real Madrid

Antoine Griezmann showcased his brilliance with an exceptional goal in extra time, leading Atletico Madrid to victory over Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey.

The scoring began with Samuel Lino seizing an opportunity from close range to give Atletico the lead. However, goalkeeper Jan Oblak inadvertently redirected Luka Modric’s free-kick into his own net, leveling the score for Real.

Alvaro Morata reclaimed the lead for Atletico, and Joselu extended their advantage by heading in Jude Bellingham’s cross in the 82nd minute. Griezmann’s impressive goal from a tight angle in the 100th minute and Rodrigo Riquelme’s subsequent strike secured a 4-1 victory for Diego Simeone’s side, propelling them into the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.

This clash marked the second thrilling encounter between the two teams in just eight days, with Real emerging victorious 5-3 after extra time in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final in Saudi Arabia last week.

During that match, Griezmann notched his club-record 174th goal, and his individual effort at the Civitas Metropolitano marked goal number 175 for the 32-year-old.

Both teams return to league action this weekend. Real, set to host Almeria on Sunday, trail surprise leaders Girona by one point. Meanwhile, Atletico, visiting Granada on Monday, currently holds the fifth position in the league standings.
