Pep Guardiola has reportedly decided against becoming the next manager of the Italian national team, opting instead to remain out of coaching and spend more time with his family.
According to reports, the former Manchester City boss turned down the offer for personal reasons, with money said to have played no part in his decision.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano posted on X, “Pep Guardiola said no to Italy due to a personal decision, it’s not about a financial proposal. Guardiola will be back coaching at the right time and when he feels a new project is the best one possible; now dedicating time to family.”
Guardiola is widely regarded as one of football’s greatest managers, having enjoyed trophy-laden spells with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City. His achievements include several league titles and multiple UEFA Champions League successes.
The Italian Football Federation had hoped to appoint the Spaniard as its next head coach, but he is understood to have decided that now is not the right time to take on another managerial role.
Even after rejecting the offer, Guardiola continues to be one of the most sought-after coaches in world football, with many expecting him to return when he finds a project that matches his ambitions.
The 55-year-old is currently enjoying a break from the pressures of football management as he prioritises his personal life before making a decision on the next phase of his coaching career.
PUNCH Online had earlier reported that the Italian Football Federation held discussions with Guardiola over the vacant coaching position, a move confirmed by federation president Giovanni Malago.
