Pep Guardiola has extended his contract as manager of Manchester City for an additional two seasons, reaffirming his commitment to the Premier League champions during what he described as a pivotal period for the club.
Speculation had mounted about the 53-year-old’s future, particularly with City currently embroiled in an ongoing investigation into 115 alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations—charges the club vehemently denies. The uncertainty was further fueled by the team’s four-match losing streak across all competitions, the worst run of Guardiola’s managerial career excluding penalty shootouts. Despite these challenges, City remain second in the Premier League, five points behind leaders Liverpool.
Reports earlier this week suggested Guardiola might leave at the end of the season, especially after City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain—a close ally—confirmed he would step down. However, Guardiola’s decision to stay was confirmed on Thursday, with the manager explaining his change of heart in an interview with the club’s media channels.
“I felt I could not leave now, simple as that,” Guardiola said. “Don’t ask me why. Maybe the four defeats played a part. I felt the club still wanted me, and I realized we were still in this together—that’s why I signed.”
He added, “I enjoy being here. I like my job, and I love being the manager of this club. I’ve always said, if I ever feel I’m not the right person for the job, even under contract, I’d inform the chairman and CEO. But I don’t feel that way now, which is why I decided to extend my stay.”
A Legacy of Success
Since taking charge in 2016, Guardiola has transformed Manchester City into a dominant force, winning 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles—four of them consecutively, setting an English football record. His tenure has also seen the club achieve a historic treble in 2023, comprising the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League, alongside four consecutive League Cup victories between 2018 and 2021.
Reflecting on his decision to remain, Guardiola said in the club’s official statement: “Manchester City means so much to me. This is my ninth season here, and we’ve experienced incredible moments together. I feel a deep connection to this club, which is why I’m so happy to stay for another two seasons.”
He expressed gratitude to the club’s leadership, staff, players, and fans, adding: “I’ve always said I have everything a manager could wish for here, and I’m incredibly thankful for that. My focus now is to win more trophies and continue making history with this great team.”
City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak also welcomed the news, stating, “Like every City fan, I am delighted that Pep’s journey with Manchester City continues. His dedication, passion, and innovative thinking have reshaped the game, and we are fortunate to have him for two more seasons.”
