Guedes nets brace as Wolves beat Burnley

Goncalo Guedes scored his first two goals for Wolves since January 2023, leading them to a victory over Burnley and securing a place in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The Portuguese forward, who had been on loan at Benfica and Villarreal since his last goal for Wolves against Liverpool, opened the scoring by hooking in a cross from Brazilian debutant Pedro Lima.

Guedes then added his second goal after running onto a Daniel Podence through-ball and calmly clipping the ball past Burnley goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky.

He received a standing ovation as he left the pitch with 15 minutes remaining.

Hladky, who could have done better to prevent the opening goal, earlier made a fine double save, first parrying Podence’s curling shot and then tipping Lima’s rebound onto the post.

Wolves did suffer a setback when midfielder Boubacar Traore was forced off with an injury late in the first half.

On the same day, it was reported that Wolves are in advanced talks for a £21 million move for Fluminense midfielder Andre, 23.

Wolves will face Brighton in the third round next month.

Burnley started three debutants—Hannibal Mejbri, Bashir Humphreys, and Joe Worrall—but Scott Parker’s Championship side struggled, failing to register a shot on target.
