Norway national football team secured a historic place in the World Cup quarter-finals after defeating Brazil national football team 2-1, thanks to a late brace from Erling Haaland.

The Manchester City F.C. striker broke the deadlock in the 79th minute, rising above Gabriel Magalhaes to head past goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Haaland then sealed the victory with a superb long-range strike that found the bottom corner, leaving the five-time world champions on the brink of elimination.

Substitute Neymar reduced the deficit with a late penalty in only his second appearance of the tournament, but Brazil could not find an equaliser.

Earlier in the contest, Bruno Guimaraes missed the chance to put Brazil ahead after seeing his penalty saved by Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.

Haaland’s two goals took his tally at the tournament to seven, drawing him level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the race for the Golden Boot.

The victory also earned Norway a first-ever appearance in the World Cup last eight, where they will face either England national football team or Mexico national football team.

For Brazil, the defeat marked another disappointing early exit from the tournament after failing to capitalise on several scoring opportunities.
