In a historic occasion for the club, Bayer Leverkusen clinched the Bundesliga trophy for the first time in their 120-year history, ending Bayern Munich’s 11-year dominance with a commanding 5-0 triumph over Werder Bremen on Sunday.

Xabi Alonso’s team understood that a victory would guarantee the title with five games remaining, and they showcased a dominant performance worthy of champions, stretching their impressive unbeaten streak to 43 games across all competitions.

Florian Wirtz secured a hat-trick, while goals from Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka contributed to the triumph. However, Boniface, whose crucial goals have played a significant role in Leverkusen’s title pursuit, was swift to shift away from individual accolades.

“I no lead anybody ooo. We lead ourselves,” the Nigerian striker wrote on social media platform X Monday, emphasising the collective effort behind the club’s success.

Boniface opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 25th minute and later provided an assist for Xhaka’s goal, taking his tally to 11 goals and nine assists in just 18 Bundesliga appearances this season, despite missing four months due to injury.

Alonso said, “This is a very special moment for the club. Winning the Bundesliga for the first time in 120 years is something very special. The players are top. I am very proud of everyone.”

Having clinched the Bundesliga title, Leverkusen now have the chance to make history by being the first team to remain unbeaten throughout an entire Bundesliga season. Additionally, they are still in the running for an unprecedented treble, with both the DFB-Pokal and UEFA Europa League titles still within reach.
