Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s injury-plagued season might be over as AC Milan revealed on Saturday that the Sweden international has sustained a right calf injury.
Ibrahimovic will be sidelined for an unspecified period of time, but Milan did say that there is a “small hope” that he will be able to play before the end of the season, which in Italy ends on the first weekend in June.
The injury was sustained by the seasoned striker during pregame stretching before Milan’s Saturday 2-0 victory over Lecce.
Ibrahimovic, a crucial component in Milan’s ascent to the top of Italian football, has made few appearances for Stefano Pioli’s team this season. He made his season-long comeback in February after having surgery on his left knee in May.
The 41-year-old has only started one game for Milan this season; it was a 3-1 victory against Udinese in March, when he set a Serie A record by scoring the oldest-ever goal.
He won’t play in the derby semi-final against Inter Milan next month since he isn’t on the list of Milan players eligible for the Champions League.
Given that his contract expires in June and there has been no word on an extension, Ibrahimovic’s most recent injury raises questions about whether he would retire at the end of the current season.
