‘I’m ashamed’, Neymar reacts after club suffers defeat

Brazilian forward Neymar was left in tears after his boyhood club, Santos, suffered a crushing 6-0 home defeat to Vasco da Gama — the heaviest loss of his professional career.

The result was historic, marking the first time Santos had ever conceded six goals at home in a Brazilian Serie A fixture. The eight-time champions, now just two points above the relegation zone, immediately dismissed head coach Cleber Xavier following Sunday’s humiliation.

Former Liverpool and Aston Villa star Philippe Coutinho struck twice to inspire Vasco’s first victory in six league matches — their most emphatic league triumph in 17 years.

“I’m ashamed,” said Neymar. “I’m totally disappointed with our performance. The fans have every right to protest, obviously without using violence.

“But if they want to curse and insult, they’re in their right. To sum up our attitude on the field, it was terrible.

“I’ve never experienced this in my life. The tears were from anger, from everything. Unfortunately, I can’t help in every way.

“I think everyone today needs to go home and think about what they want to do.”

Neymar, the world’s most expensive player after joining Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona for £200m in 2017, returned to Santos in January following the termination of his deal with Saudi side Al-Hilal. He later extended his stay with a fresh six-month contract in June. Since rejoining, he has contributed six goals and three assists across 21 appearances.

The 33-year-old’s return has been marred by injuries. He broke down in tears after a hamstring injury forced him off just 34 minutes into his first Serie A start of the season, sidelining him for five league games.

Xavier, 61, who was appointed head coach in April after years as an assistant at various clubs and with the Brazilian national team, managed just five wins in 15 games. Santos now sit precariously above the relegation zone, only one place higher than Vasco, who climbed out of the bottom four with their victory.

Santos, promoted back to the top flight last November after their first-ever relegation, next face fourth-placed Bahia away on Sunday, 24 August.
