“Injuries have played major role,” Slot defends faltering Liverpool campaign

Arne Slot remains firm in his belief that a relentless injury crisis has derailed Liverpool’s efforts to defend their Premier League title.

Following a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Tuesday—marking their ninth league loss—the Reds are preparing for an immediate return to Molineux for an FA Cup fifth-round clash. Slot pointed to the absence of key creative force Florian Wirtz as a major factor in the team’s struggles. Additionally, record signing Alexander Isak has been unavailable since December due to a “broken leg.”

Impact on Team Balance

During a press conference on Thursday, Slot explained the difficulty of maintaining consistency:

“I think you see individual players getting better and better, but progress has had setbacks because of injuries as well,” he remarked.

He noted that without Wirtz, who is “able to create a lot from open play,” the team lost its “certain balance” and was forced to constantly “adjust.”

Regarding the difficulty of scoring in the top flight, he added: “We are not the only team that finds it hard to create a lot of chances from open play.”

Defensive Woes and Squad Depth

The backline has been decimated, with Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni ruled out for the season, alongside lengthy absences for Joe Gomez and Jeremie Frimpong. Despite spending roughly £450 million in the summer, Slot defended the club’s recruitment strategy.

He insisted he was “really happy” with the existing transfer model.

However, he admitted that sticking to a specific squad size means “it hurts even more if you have three or four long-term injuries.”

Fitness Update

There is a slight chance Wirtz could feature on Friday. Slot revealed the midfielder “trained half-and-half with the team” recently, representing the “next step in his rehab.” The manager is hopeful he might be “available for a few minutes in the best scenario.”
