Real Betis came from behind to defeat Real Madrid, with Isco scoring the decisive goal against his former club.
The visitors, who are currently second in La Liga, took the lead when Kylian Mbappe played in Ferland Mendy, who then squared the ball for Brahim Diaz to tap into an empty net from close range.
Madrid had a few opportunities to extend their lead before Johnny Cardoso equalised with a header in the 34th minute from an Isco corner.
Isco, captaining Betis against the club where he spent nine years, then converted a 54th-minute penalty after Antonio Rudiger fouled Jesus Rodriguez inside the box.
Betis almost added a third when Cucho Hernandez shot wide after being set up by Manchester United loanee Antony, who was available following the successful appeal against his red card from last week.
Under the guidance of former Madrid and Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini, Betis climbed to sixth in the La Liga standings, thoroughly deserving their win with 18 shots compared to Madrid’s nine.
This marks the fourth La Liga defeat of the season for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who remain behind Barcelona on goal difference.
Atletico Madrid could surpass them with a win over Athletic Bilbao later on Saturday (20:00 GMT).
Isco shines against his old club
Isco scored 53 goals in 353 appearances for Real Madrid, winning five Champions League titles and three La Liga titles during his nine years at the club.
The 32-year-old former Spain midfielder joined Betis in 2023 after a brief stint at Sevilla.
In addition to providing an assist and scoring a goal, Isco was instrumental in the match, touching the ball 97 times—second only to his former teammate Luka Modric.
He also received a late yellow card for time-wasting.
This goal marked his sixth of the season in just 15 appearances, with four of those coming in the last month.
