Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi was named Man of the Match after delivering an impressive performance in Fulham’s 1-0 pre-season friendly victory over Benfica at the Estadio Algarve on Friday night.
The 27-year-old, wearing the number 17 jersey, scored the winning goal in the 21st minute, capitalizing on an assist from Antonee Robinson by slotting the ball home from inside the box.
Despite Benfica’s early dominance and several attempts that tested Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno, the Cottagers absorbed the pressure and gradually took control of the game. Fulham’s breakthrough came after a failed Benfica attack led to a quick counter, initiated by the industrious Adama Traore and finished coolly by Iwobi.
Iwobi continued to shine until the 79th minute when he was substituted for Martial Godo. His compatriot Calvin Bassey also delivered a strong defensive performance, playing the full 90 minutes for the Premier League side.
Fulham will next face Sevilla at the same venue on Monday night, a match that could feature four Nigerian players: Iwobi and Bassey for Fulham, and Chidera Ejuke and Kelechi Iheanacho for the La Liga team.
Iwobi, who previously played for Arsenal and Everton, showcased his excellent form with a standout performance and crucial goal, a promising sign for both Fulham and Super Eagles fans as the new season approaches.
