Iwobi shines as Arsenal defeat Southampton 3-2
Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi provided two assists as Danny Welbeck scored twice in Arsenal’s hard-earned 3-2 win over stubborn Southampton in a fiery game that saw both sides end with 10 men.
The Saints stunned the Gunners after 17 minutes when Shane Long found the net.
Arsene Wenger’s men needed to respond and so they did.
January signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang restored parity in the 28th minutes. It was a delightful finish by the Gabonese.
But Southampton had their own response.
Forward Charlie Austin was the man who superbly delivered it.
At this point, the Gunners needed to dig deeper and Welbeck, a former Manchester United forward, was on hand to send the Arsenal faithful into rapture with a winner nine minutes from time.
But the game did not end there.
Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere and Southampton’s Jack Stephens were involved in a combat. The referee had to enforce the laws of the game by showing the Saints’ man a red card, while Wilshere got a yellow.
Few minutes later, Mohamed Elneny of Arsenal was also asked to leave the pitch after another brawl.
