La Liga President, Javier Tebas has formally submitted his resignation.

Having led the Spanish league for the last ten years, Tebas’s current term was set to conclude on December 26th.

According to reports, Tebas has submitted his resignation, and at present, Vice-Presidents Quico Catalan and Miguel Angel Gil Marin are overseeing the responsibilities.

Tebas’ resignation isn’t straightforward

Although Tebas is no longer at the helm, his resignation is not a simple matter. He has chosen to step down before the conclusion of his mandate to facilitate new elections before the year’s end.

Tebas is also a candidate for re-election, facing no opposition at the moment. Consequently, it is probable that he will continue to hold sway over the Spanish league. He was re-elected unopposed in 2019 as well.

Despite overseeing the league for the past decade, the Spanish lawyer’s tenure has been marked by controversy.

Barcelona, in particular, has strongly voiced concerns about Tebas’ leadership. ESPN reported that the Catalan club has recently urged him to resign.

There are allegations that Tebas furnished inaccurate information to implicate the club during the Caso Negreira investigations. Barcelona is not the only entity expressing dissatisfaction with the former league chief.

Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior also took issue with him over his handling of the racism issues, sparking a war of words online after the Brazilian believed the league was not taking action against his racial abused by fans.
