Kaminski sent off as Luton hold on for Pompey draw

Ten-man Luton managed to secure a point in a goalless draw against newly promoted Portsmouth.

Luton’s goalkeeper, Thomas Kaminski, was sent off in the first half after receiving two yellow cards within three minutes—first for time-wasting and then for a collision with Pompey forward Paddy Lane outside the penalty area.

Despite being a man down, the Hatters nearly took the lead after the break when Elijah Adebayo missed a chance when played in on goal. Portsmouth had more possession as the game progressed but couldn’t capitalize, leaving both teams still searching for their first win of the season.

The draw allowed Luton, relegated from the Premier League last season, to earn their first point after a 4-1 defeat to Burnley at home on Monday.

The match started with chances for both sides, as Carlton Morris and Adebayo forced saves from Pompey goalkeeper Will Norris, and Kaminski tipped a Conor Shaughnessy header over the bar.

Kaminski’s red card halted the game’s flow. The Belgian keeper was booked for delaying goal-kicks and then sent off after rashly rushing off his line and fouling Lane. Luton manager Rob Edwards substituted striker Morris to bring on backup goalkeeper James Shea.

Shea, making his third league appearance since April 2022, had little to do besides a comfortable stop from a Callum Lang header, as Luton’s defense limited Portsmouth’s opportunities.

John Mousinho’s Portsmouth have now earned two points from their two Championship games after winning the League One title last season. However, after a 1-0 loss to Millwall in the EFL Cup midweek, they have now failed to score in successive games.

Luton will travel to managerless Preston next Saturday, while Portsmouth face a long trip to Middlesbrough on the same day.
