Kieran McKenna expected to stay as Ipswich boss

Kieran McKenna is expected to sign a new deal to remain as Ipswich Town manager after guiding the club to the Premier League, reports BBC Radio Suffolk.

The 38-year-old was previously considered by Chelsea as a potential replacement for Mauricio Pochettino and was also linked with the managerial position at Brighton.

Last week, it was anticipated that McKenna would decline a new contract offer at Portman Road. However, following his withdrawal from consideration for the role at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, it appears he will continue with the club, having steered them to the top flight with consecutive promotions.

For his achievement in guiding Ipswich back to the Premier League after a 22-year absence, McKenna was honored as the League Managers Association’s Manager of the Year.

When the Northern Irishman departed his role as Manchester United assistant first-team coach to assume the managerial position at Portman Road in December 2021, Ipswich Town found themselves in mid-table in League One.

During that season, the Tractor Boys concluded their campaign in 11th place on the table. However, McKenna’s inaugural full season at the helm yielded remarkable results, culminating in a second-place finish and automatic promotion from the third tier.

In a sensational turn of events, McKenna guided Ipswich back to the Premier League, securing a runner-up position in the Championship table with 96 points, trailing only one point behind Leicester City.

Furthermore, Ipswich emerged as the most prolific team in the division, netting a total of 92 goals throughout the campaign.
