Kluivert nets hat-trick as Bournemouth end Newcastle’s winning run
Justin Kluivert scored a brilliant hat-trick as Bournemouth secured a 4-1 victory at St James’ Park, stretching their unbeaten Premier League streak to 10 matches and halting Newcastle’s own nine-match winning run.
The Magpies had hoped to set a new club record of 10 consecutive wins across all competitions, but struggled to maintain the form that had placed them among the title contenders.
Bournemouth started the game brightly and took the lead when Kluivert calmly finished off Antoine Semenyo’s cutback.
Newcastle responded with an equalizer, as Bruno Guimaraes rose to head in a corner from Lewis Hall, despite goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga getting a hand to the ball.
However, Bournemouth regained the lead with another composed finish from Kluivert, capitalizing on a misplaced pass from Guimaraes just outside his own box.
The visitors thought they had made it 3-1 when Dango Ouattara scored from close range, but VAR ruled that Guimaraes’ clearance had gone out of play before the goal.
Kluivert completed his hat-trick with a spectacular long-range drive after a poor pass from Anthony Gordon, and Milos Kerkez added further misery for Newcastle with a powerful strike in added time.
With the win, Bournemouth are now just one point behind fourth-placed Newcastle in the standings and could rise to sixth, depending on the outcome of Aston Villa’s match against Arsenal.
