Knee surgery puts Lewis Ferguson’s Euro hopes in serious doubt

Bologna has announced that Lewis Ferguson, who is “devastated” by the news, will need surgery for a cruciate ligament injury, casting doubts on his participation in Euro 2024 for Scotland.

The 24-year-old midfielder, a regular selection in Steve Clarke’s recent squads, was substituted during Saturday’s goalless draw with Monza after 62 minutes.

Ferguson has contributed six goals and four assists in Serie A this season.

The club stated that the timeline for his recovery will be determined post-surgery, but with the European Championship set to commence in two months in Germany, Ferguson’s chances of participation appear slim.

“Devastated with [Monday’s] news but that’s life,” Ferguson said on Instagram. “I will do everything to come back better and stronger than before.”

With 12 caps for Scotland, all earned under Clarke, the former Aberdeen player showcased an impressive performance off the bench in a recent friendly defeat to Northern Ireland.

Since his move from Pittodrie to Bologna in 2022, Ferguson has ascended to the role of captain at the Italian club, playing a pivotal part in their quest for Champions League qualification this season.
