La Liga wants Barcelona against Atletico in Miami

Barcelona’s December league match against Atletico Madrid could be played in Miami, with La Liga officials optimistic that FIFA will approve the proposal.

If approved, it would mark the first time a La Liga game is held in the United States.

The final decision will rest with FIFA, football’s global governing body.

The fixture is currently scheduled for December 22, just before La Liga enters its winter break.

Both Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are also set to compete in the four-team Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia in early January.

In April, FIFA withdrew from a legal challenge by match promoter Relevent, which aims to host overseas league games in the U.S.

A month later, FIFA announced the creation of a working group to assess the impact of hosting competitive domestic matches abroad.

La Liga president Javier Tebas has expressed his ambition to expand La Liga’s presence internationally.

In 2019, Barcelona had planned to play a league match against Girona in Miami, but the idea was abandoned following opposition from Spain’s football association and players’ union.

League sources acknowledge that there is still work to be done, but they remain hopeful the plan will be approved.

The Premier League, meanwhile, has stated it has no intention of staging matches overseas.
