It was a frustrating Sunday for Barcelona as they were held to a 2-2 draw away at Granada. However, it marked a historic moment for the young talent Lamine Yamal.
The Barcelona winger found the back of the net late in the first half, becoming a part of history with his team’s opening goal.
At the age of 16 years and 87 days, he achieved the distinction of becoming the youngest goal-scorer in La Liga, breaking an 11-year record previously held by Fabrice Olinga of Malaga.
The former record-holder, Ansu Fati, had scored at the age of 16 years and 304 days against Osasuna in 2019.
Barcelona found themselves trailing 0-2 after just 29 minutes, but Yamal’s goal came in added time of the first half when he neatly tapped in a pass from Joao Felix. Granada maintained their resolute defense and held onto a 2-1 lead until the 85th minute.
Sergi Roberto leveled the score with an assist from Alejandro Balde. Felix believed he had netted a thrilling game-winner, but his goal was disallowed due to offside.
As of now, Barcelona sits in the third position on the league table, trailing the top-ranked Real Madrid by three points and closely following the impressive Girona by just one point, according to BBC.
It has been a remarkable year for Yamal, marked by a series of record-breaking achievements since his debut for the Spanish giants. At the age of 15 years and 290 days, he became the youngest-ever player to don Barcelona’s jersey, coming on as a substitute against Real Betis.
A few months later, he also became the youngest player and goalscorer for Spain, accomplishing this milestone at the age of 16 years and 57 days. He surpassed his Barcelona teammate Gavi, who had previously held the record at 17 years and 62 days.
This season, Yamal has made appearances in nine Barcelona games, earning five starts, and on Sunday, he added yet another record to his impressive list of accomplishments.
