Las Palmas stun Barcelona with unexpected victory
Barcelona’s 125th anniversary celebrations were marred by a shock defeat to struggling Las Palmas in La Liga.
The visitors took an early lead when former Barca striker Sandro scored with a low shot, drawing boos from the home crowd.
Barcelona captain Raphinha responded with a powerful equalizer, but Las Palmas regained the advantage through Wolves loanee Fabio Silva, who netted his fifth league goal after connecting with Javi Munoz’s excellent pass.
The result lifts Las Palmas to 14th place, while Barcelona’s lead at the top is at risk, with Real Madrid able to close the gap to one point if they beat Getafe on Sunday.
Despite marking their anniversary with a new mascot, Barcelona’s celebrations fell flat. This loss marks their first home defeat to Las Palmas since September 1971 and extends their winless streak in the league to three matches.
Their troubles were compounded when Alejandro Balde was stretchered off in the 26th minute following a collision with Sandro.
Although Hansi Flick’s side recorded 26 shots—their highest in a league game this season—they failed to break through.
Notable efforts from Raphinha, Ferran Torres, and Pablo Torre were all denied, with Jasper Cillessen making crucial saves to secure the visitors’ win.
